College Student Involvement
in the New Baptist Covenant

The celebration of a New Baptist Covenant marks a pivotal moment in Baptist history. As many as 20,000 Baptists from across North America will gather at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta January 30-February 1, 2008, in an unprecedented demonstration of Baptist unity. We believe in the next generation of Baptists and that it is important to have student involvement in this event. Therefore we want to make it as easy for you as possible to participate. We will provide free housing, food, substantial travel stipends and t-shirts.  All you need to do is bring your students!

Before December 19, 2007 we will need a relatively close estimate of how many students will be coming from your school. We will also need the name and contact information for your student representative who will serve on the Student Leadership Committee (there is more information about student representatives in the section below titled “Student Leadership Committee”). Contact Hannah McMahan at 336.213.2353 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it with this information.

We will provide free housing in the gym of Mercer University’s Atlanta campus both Friday night and Saturday night.  Students will need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow.  The gym is equipped with showers.3001 Mercer University Drive, Atlanta, GA 30341-4155

Travel Stipends

The New Baptist Covenant will provide substantial stipends to make it easier for you to travel to Atlanta. We need to see how many schools are planning on coming before we can assess the best way to distribute the money, but this stipend should cover a significant portion, if not all, of your gas.

Service Sites

As Baptists there are many things that we can disagree on but we can all agree on the biblical mandates to spread the gospel, promote peace with justice, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, care for the sick and marginalized, welcome the stranger and liberate the oppressed. One of the founding principles behind the New Baptist Covenant is that we can do more together than we can separately. Therefore, on Saturday, February 2, 2008, the college students will have an opportunity to participate in a day of service in the local Atlanta area. This is our opportunity to unite around serving others and God.

Student Leadership Committee

Each school will nominate a student representative to serve on the Student Leadership Committee. This committee will serve as a sounding board, help plan worship and work as leaders at the service sites. These students can also help you advertise this opportunity to your students.

Activities specifically designated for college students are italicized.  Students are, however, invited to all events.
